Of Rooms and Dresses
To live in a room means more than to just be there.
The idea of space and time, expressed in my paintings,
refers to the role-playing game.
It describes the scenery build around a person, clarifying her or his character and role.
In this sense, even an armchair or a table conveys information.
Important to me is to exceed genres and to transfer them into their own world.
The moment of irritation is of importance.
The signs and symbols of the 17th and 18th Century stand
in sharp contrast with today’s
science- and mass-media-oriented society.
Particularly those pieces of jewellery attract my attention that served as lucky charms in the 17th century, or ornaments worked into the furniture that protrude into the room (Baroque).
The playful splendour of forms and shapes of this time, constitutes an aesthetic contrast to techno parades and corny attempts like the "Neo-Baroque".
In my opinion, down to the present day,
the same power structures and principles exist:
A club that admits a member today because it fits the club well,
prevents innovation.
Experimentation and Individuality Versus Trend Research:
"Style can be attached to a jacket like a label." (quotation)
The borderline between body and textile, is not always fixed.
"Where does the clothes begin, where does it break off",
this is one of the questions my pictures address.
I try to examine the interaction of earlier epochs’ style with contemporary conceptions of trends, lifestyle, and scene.
The process of investigation and detection, is at the same time path and product.
The medium is the message!
Clothes have a code that has to be solved, independent of whether it concerns clothes of a well-known designer or cheap merchandise.
To play the game of possibilities is what interests me.
The Dress as a Symbol of the Body:
Beside its protective function,
clothes also tell us something about a person.
To which group do I belong – what do I show – what do I hide –
how do I express myself by certain articles of clothing -
which symbols are hidden in fashion?
